WeTransfer Snags Troy Carter For Its Board During SMASHD Labs And Breaks New Record: 1 Billion Transfers Per Year
Fast-growing company teams up with entertainment powerhouse and tech investor Troy Carter after seven weeks of working together during Atom Factory’s startup accelerator
NEW YORK (November 9, 2015) — WeTransfer, the simple file-transfer service to discover and share new digital content, today announced that, globally, more than one billion files are now being transferred through the service annually – a record-high. Also, WeTransfer has named its newest board member, renowned talent manager and successful VC Troy Carter.
Troy Carter brings 20 years of experience to discovering, developing and managing talent in music, having launched the careers of megastars like Lady Gaga, Meghan Trainor and Charlie Puth. In 2015, Carter launched tech and culture platform Smashd.co for aspiring entrepreneurs. Carter, a guest shark on season 7 of ABC’s prime-time show Shark Tank, also has an unmatched track record in advising and investing in rising stars in the startup world, including companies like Uber, Lyft, Spotify and Warby Parker.
WeTransfer was hand-picked as one of six startups for SMASHD Labs, the accelerator program started by Carter’s entertainment company Atom Factory. To be part of SMASHD Labs, startups must demonstrate how they can shape culture and influence the entertainment world.
“Troy’s work in the music industry is legendary – he has a gift for discovering and managing the best new talent,” said Bas Beerens, CEO and founder of WeTransfer. “We’re learning from his expertise as we work to scale WeTransfer in the U.S., which is our fastest-growing market.”
Troy joins WeTransfer’s board at a key moment. WeTransfer now has more than 85 million transfers per month worldwide, totaling more than one billion transfers annually, with more than half of its global users working in creative industries. Designed for anyone to express their creativity, next year, WeTransfer is on pace to double its total annual transfers from one billion to two billion.
“WeTransfer is a necessity for millions of people around the world, especially those in the creative community,” said Troy Carter. “Every month, it provides 80 million users – many of them artists, designers, makers and musicians – with an inspiring place to transfer files and share their work. It has an incredible business model with a natural virality, proven by hitting the one billion transfers per year milestone. The scale is impressive and it’s clear there’s an enormous growth opportunity ahead.”
Founded in 2009 by Bas Beerens and Nalden, WeTransfer was born out of the duo’s own need for a simple solution for sending large files when collaborating on creative projects. They wanted a service that was easy-to-use and design-oriented.
Today, WeTransfer is recognized for its clean, aesthetic interface. At WeTransfer.com, users see full screen images as a backdrop they can interact with while their files are uploading. These images are a blend of featured editorial artists and advertising. In keeping with its commitment to beautiful design and support for artists, WeTransfer gives away one third of its full screen wallpapers to artists, free of charge. All artwork featured is carefully curated by the WeTransfer team.
There’s no login and no fee for up to two gigabytes per transfer. A paid upgrade gives people access to WeTransfer Plus, letting them send 20 gigabyte transfers, personalize their wallpaper backgrounds and add passwords to the files they share.
WeTransfer is a platform to share and discover fresh digital content. Its so simple to use, you can spend all your time and energy on your projects. Every transfer is also an opportunity to be inspired by some of the world’s best creative talents. WeTransfer is a trusted and reliable service that always respects your privacy and makes transferring files easy and enjoyable.

WeTransfer makes beautifully obvious tools that bring ideas to life. Founded in 2009 in Amsterdam as a simple, well-designed file sharing service for the creative community, WeTransfer has grown to include tools that scale across the creative spectrum, including editorial platform WePresent (with over 2M monthly readers), mobile app 'Collect by WeTransfer' (with over 4M monthly users), quick slide-making tool Paste™ (with over 100,000 teams), immersive sketching tool Paper® (with over 25M downloads), and the original web platform with 43M monthly users and over a billion files sent each month.
From the beginning, WeTransfer has prioritized bringing “offline” values - trust, transparency, and ethics - online. This means having a responsible data policy and tools that don’t distract people from their creative flow. WeTransfer has pioneered a new means of online advertising, resulting in the platform’s full-page wallpapers, designed by our award-winning in-house creative studio. Advertisers include industry-leading brands like Apple, Saint Laurent, Google, Balenciaga, Samsung, Netflix, Adidas, and Squarespace.
Since its founding, WeTransfer has proudly supported the creative communities and given up to 30% of advertising space to support the arts, donating over 5 billion impressions in 2017. Through our ongoing advertising grant program and content platform, WePresent, we have partnered with hundreds of groundbreaking artists and organizations, including Björk, King Krule, FKA twigs, Ryan McGinley, Ami Vitale, the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the UN Development Program, the World Wildlife Foundation and the Prince Estate. In 2016, WeTransfer launched the world’s first free Masters of the Arts in design thinking with the University of the Underground and Worldwide FM, the global radio station run by legendary BBC DJ Gilles Peterson.
Following a $25 million investment from Highland Europe in 2015, WeTransfer opened a US office in Venice Beach, Los Angeles, to add to the Amsterdam headquarters. In 2018, WeTransfer acquired popular creative apps Paper® and Paste™ and expanded its US presence to Seattle and New York City.
